Runaway Bay is located north of Southport. Robert George Oates (of Anglers Paradise Development Co) bought 350 acres of land in 1939 along Biggera Creek and the Broadwater. In the 1950’s there were 50 homes and a town water supply. The bridge from Biggema Creek to Lands End was constructed in 1960 and opened the area to further development. Lae Enterprises Co bought 450 acres of land to the north of Anglers Paradise and the west Broadwater shore in 1967. In 1972 subdivision began to create Runaway Bay. The name means tranquil retreat which suited the new residential and boating development perfectly.
The land use of Runaway Bay is residential with the exception of the north-west corner which is part of Pine Ridge Conservation Park. Included in Runaway Bay is Crab Island (undeveloped mangroves) and Carters Bank (sandbank from Biggera Creek).
In 1975 St Francis Xavier’s Catholic School opened, services were held at the school until The Holy Family Catholic Church opened in 1983. The closest Government schools are in Biggera Waters (primary) and Coombabah (primary and high). The library opened in 1992 and in 2011 underwent major refurbishment. In 2000 runner Ron Clarke established the Sports Super Centre. This includes a stadium, Olympic Aquatic Centre, gymnasium and sports medicine facility. The facilities accommodates cricket, netball, AFL, soccer, athletics and indoor sports. There are two boat ramps in Runaway Bay and many green parks and reserves.
