Burleigh Waters was named in 1981. It is made up of five created lakes – Lake Heron, Miami Lake, Swan Lake, Pelican Lake and Burleigh Lake. Some homes on the Burleigh Waters canals are a flood risk during heavy rains and flooding as the canal system is tidal. Sharks live in the canal system so swimming is advised at beaches between the flags. The Isle of Capri was one of the first canal estates and was constructed in the 1950’s. Due to the popularity of canal living, developers have created many new estates since then.
Up until the 1990’s Stephens Swamp occupied much of Burleigh Waters. Thomas Blacket Stephens was a local landholder who drained a lot of swampland starting from 1861. Stephens Swamp was gradually replaced by the man made lakes which now make up Burleigh Waters.
in 1967 Marymount College opened. In 1987 Caningeraba State School opened. In 1991 the Burleigh Waters Library opened its doors. The closest government secondary schools are located in Miami and Varsity Lakes. There are two large shopping precincts in the Burleigh Waters area.
